18th / 19th Century English School very large oil on canvas maritime battle painting, possibly of HMS Agamemnon, with the ship sharing very similar characteristics. Shallop boat to foreground contains the captain and a small black boy. Appears unsigned, framed in gilt frame. If the painting is of the HMS Agamemnon, Lord Nelson served as Agamemnon's captain from January 1793 for 3 years and 3 months, during which time she saw considerable service in the Mediterranean. Despite Nelson's fondness for the ship, she was frequently in need of repair and refitting, and would likely have been hulked or scrapped in 1802 had war with France not recommenced. She fought at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, as part of Nelson's weather column, where she forced the surrender of the Spanish four-decker Santísima Trinidad. Agamemnon's later career was served in South American waters off Brazil. 107cm x 93cm. Buyer must collect or arrange own transportation.
